3 Simple and Inexpensive Ways to add Style to your Closet

1. Paint your closet walls a color different than your closet shelves

Picture
Even a plain, white closet will look more stylish if you paint your walls a darker, contrasting color. No matter how simple the closet, paint will give your closet a fresh, fun look. And the options are endless.

2. Replace your mishmash of hangers

Say goodbye to all those plastic tube and metal dry cleaner hangers and start with a fresh set of matching, slim, velvet hangers. Not only do they take up less room than the plastic hangers, but they're sturdy and your clothes won't slip off.

3. Use stylish hardware

Drawer pulls don't have to be boring. There are so many affordable drawer and cabinet pulls that will make your closet stand out for very little money.

7 Steps For Organizing Your Closet

1/25/2021

1  Empty
Empty out your entire closet. You might even think about getting rid of all those old metal hangers.
wire hangers
2  Clean & Paint?
How does it look? This might be the time to dust and clean the walls, floor and shelves before you put everything back. Consider a fresh coat of paint as well.
Donation Box
3  Throw Away & Donate
Before they go back in the closet, examine each piece for stains, holes, or just pieces that are tired and worn out. If they're not worth donating, and you're not using it for painting or yard work, then it's time to let go and throw them away. Now you're down to the "good stuff." Think hard about whether you actually wear each piece. If you haven't worn something in the past 12 months (through all 4 seasons), because you don't love it or it doesn't fit well, then it's time to donate. There are a few exceptions like special event clothes, but its time to get rid of those clothes you HOPE will fit again someday.
4  Hang
Hang up everything that you have room for. We recommend organizing by at least two seasons, then type of clothing (pants, tops, dresses, etc.), and then by color. You'll find things much more easily. Maybe invest in some new, no-slip, slim hangers to maximize your space.

5  Fold & Roll
Fold sweaters and place on shelves or in drawers so they'll keep their shape. Roll up casual and workout items like t-shirts and yoga/sweat pants and place side by side in drawers. The one you're looking for will be much easier to spot.
6  Relocate
Leave everything that isn't clothing or accessories out of your closet. Your closet will be much more manageable!

#1   Your Master Bedroom Closet
Closets are our specialty and often the most overcrowded space in your house. Are your hanging clothes jammed together? Are your shoes all over the floor? Here are 3 ideas to make your closet more organized:
  • Double Hang your Clothes - Double your hanging space with one bar on top and the other on the bottom (think pants on one and shirts on the other).
  • Drawers – Drawers will make your closet look nicer but they have twice the storage capacity as hanging things up. It also gives you a place to put socks, underwear, t-shirts and accessories. You might even forgo a dresser to make more room in the bedroom.
  • Open Shelving - For sweaters, shoes or for baskets, as a more economical substitute for drawers.

#2  The Laundry Room
Always one of the messiest rooms in the house, what can you do to make your laundry room more organized? Here’s 3 ways:
  • Add cabinets above your washer and dryer – Put your detergent bottles, iron and other cleaning supplies behind closed doors
  • Add a tall cabinet for your tall things – A space for your broom, mop, vacuum and ironing board
  • Space to hang clothes – Whether it's a hangin bar under a shelf or hooks behind the door, take advantage of every little bit of space to hang things that come out of the dryer

#3  Your Mudroom/Entryway
Need extra storage for your kids' book bags, shoes, coats and dog food? Maybe it's time for a cubby system for your entryway, mudroom or garage entrance:
  • Cubbies with hooks for backpacks and coats
  • Pull out drawers for mittens and gloves
  • Cabinets for bulk supplies

#4 Your Kitchen Pantry
A pantry closet with adjustable shelves, pull out drawers and even narrow spaces for baking sheets would make cooking so much easier. And make the most of your space with corner shelving.

#5 The Garage
Remember when your car(s) fit easily in the garage with all your tools, lawn mower and sports equipment? If it's been a while, it may be time to get organized, and here are a few things to start with:
  • Overhead storage  - Add a storage shelf with tubs above your cars for lesser used stuff
  • Cabinets – For your paint, lawn chemicals and whatever you want out of sight
  • Slat wall system – Even if it's only one wall of your garage, this adjustable system will allow you to get your large gardening tools and even your bikes off the garage floor

3 Important Closet Design Decisions

1/24/2020

1.  Adjustability
By choosing a custom closet system with increment holes, your closet can change as you and your family changes. You decide how high you want each shelf. You can decide if you want that second tier to hang shorter items like pants, shirts or children's clothing.

2.  Drawers
Drawers do increase the cost of a custom closet system a bit but there are several reasons to consider adding drawers, whether it's a walk-in or reach-in.
  1. A place to store the small stuff that doesn't hang like socks, underwear and jewelry
  2. Drawers can hold twice as much clothing than hanging
  3. Drawers give you a sleek look that can also hide the messy aspects of your closet

3.  Height
Use the entire vertical space of your closet. Make sure you start the top of your closet system high enough to have room for two levels of hanging clothes. Even if you don't need them now, down the road you may. And any leftover room at the top is a great place to store rarely used items.

3 Reasons Why Your Closet Isn't Organized?

10/31/2019

1  No Place To Store Your Shoes
Are your shoes on the floor or your closet buried underneath laundry or long hanging clothes? The most effective solution is to add flat, adjustable shelving. Your shows will be in plain sight, paired together. They are also a great place for accessories like purses and hats!
2  Clothes Aren't Organized by Season or Color
Slim hangers
Yes, it's easy to shove your clothes in your closet without thinking, but organizing your clothes by color and season makes picking out an outfit in the morning SOOOOOO much easier!
3  No Place for the Smaller Things
Shoe shelf
Open shelving and hanging areas are the most cost effective sections of a custom closet, but there is no better way to organize the smaller things like socks, jewelry and undergarments than enclosed closet drawers and cabinets.

3 storage solutions for your garage

Custom garage storage
1  Open Shelving
The most economical choice is open shelving racks. They come in a wide variety of materials including aluminum, steel, plastic, laminate and wood. Definitely the cheapest option. And you can minimize the cluttered look by organizing with bins and baskets.

2  Enclosed Garage Cabinets
If you want the most clutter-free look then wall-mounted cabinets are the way to go. They're also great for storing your most valuable items such as your power tools and sporting equipment .... just add locks. Cabinets come in different heights and depths with adjustable shelving to fit your needs.

3  Pegboard or Slat Wall Systems
Perfect for the side walls of your garage because they take up the least amount of space. They come in handy for ladders, shovels, rakes or any other taller items. Above a workbench, they can hold all the smaller tools you use most often such as screwdrivers, hammers, saws, etc.

Call us for a free in-home estimate and design consultation. We offer a wide variety of materials, colors, accessories and ideas to fit your storage needs and budget. (614) 848-4400

5 ways to improve a standard builder closet

1/14/2019

Standard builder walk-in closet
Problem #1:  Wasted Space Above the Shelf
Moving the shelf up one foot will gain extra space below for a second shelf or a floor shoe rack and still give you space above for storage bins or boxes, folded sweaters, etc.

Problem #2. No Shoe Storage
Consider adding a bookcase for storing all your shoes.

Problem #3. Wasted Space below Shirts and Pants
Add another shelf halfway down to create a double hang area. This will double your space immediately for all the clothes that don't need as much vertical space.

Problem #4. Wire Shelving is In-Flexible and Unattractive
Consider converting your wire shelving to a solid, laminate closet system with adjustable shelving. Depending on your taste and budget, you can select a basic white to an upgraded wood finish.

Problem #5. No Place for Belts, Ties, Scarves and Other Personal Items
With our custom closet systems, you can add closet accessories to help with all your needs including drawers, pull-put baskets and bins, scarf and tie racks, a pull-down ironing board and more.
